High Efficiency for Low-Income Program (HELP)

The High Efficiency for Low-income Program (HELP) provides energy-efficient products and services for residential customers in need. These upgrades help reduce energy use, save money and improve home comfort. AEP Ohio's program supplements state and federal income-qualified weatherization programs.

HELP benefits include:

  • A free, in-home energy assessment to identify what upgrades are needed.
  • A customized home energy recommendations report summarizing the results of the energy assessment.
  • Contractor support throughout the process.
  • Low- or no-cost upgrades to the following equipment as recommended by the energy assessment:

Who is Eligible?

AEP Ohio customers who meet the following criteria are eligible to receive benefits through HELP:

  • Are enrolled in an AEP Ohio residential electric rate.
  • Live in a single-family residence, townhome or individually metered multifamily dwelling* (e.g. apartments and condos).
  • Have a household income that is less than or equal to 300% of the federal poverty level guidelines.

Getting HELP is Simple

Apply online OR find a program-approved HELP Home Energy Assessor near you.

1 Contact an authorized contractor who will determine if you’re eligible and schedule your free home energy assessment. To find a contractor near you, submit the "Contact Us" form below or call 888.642.9363.

2 During your home energy assessment, your contractor will identify energy-efficient upgrade opportunities and generate your personalized home energy efficiency recommendations.

3 Your contractor will install the energy-efficient upgrades that you approve and verify how much energy you can save.

To qualify for this program, you must be an active residential customer of AEP Ohio. Additionally, your total household income must fall below 300% of the federal poverty level.

There is no financial commitment to get started and receive your energy assessment. Depending on your household income level, products and services will be provided at low or no cost. HELP is a program built in collaboration with local community action agencies and assistance programs to ease the burden of utility costs for qualifying customers.

The free home energy assessment is intended to provide customers with a better understanding of their home energy use and what can affect their overall consumption. Installing energy-efficient improvements helps reduce energy use, lowering your monthly energy bills and improving the comfort of your home.

An AEP Ohio authorized contractor that you select will conduct your free home energy assessment based on a schedule that works best for you.

Home energy assessments typically take between one and two hours. Your selected contractor will provide a time estimate before beginning the assessment.

Yes. The AEP Ohio customer(18+ years old) residing at the address must be home during the assessment. If you are unable to attend the assessment, please reschedule with your selected contractor for a time when you can be present.

Your selected contractor will need access to every room in the home (excluding closets), the exterior of the home, the attic and the basement.

No. However, if you rent your home, you will need written permission from your landlord authorizing the upgrades to the property.

Several measures can be installed during the energy assessment. If you select an improvement that requires additional time, the installing contractor will work with you to determine the scheduling and installation timeframe.
