APPALACHIAN ADDS ‘KIDS KORNER’ TO WEB SITE

September 4, 2007

Just in time for school, Appalachian Power has added a great new educational resource to its web site. Kid’s Korner at AppalachianPower.com uses colorful animations, playful graphics, interactive games, puzzles, science experiments, house projects and online coloring books to explore everything from power generation sources, transmission and distribution, to electrical safety, energy efficiency and utility careers. The information may be found at http://www.appalachianpower.com/go/kidskorner.

“Kids love to learn in interactive ways,” said Jeri Matheney, Appalachian Power corporate communications manager. “The Kids Korner section of our web site is a way of reaching out to kids with something fun to do that can really make an impact on them in terms of their education.”

With more than 100 pages in Kids Korner, its addition to the site creates helpful educational avenues on nearly every page. A special section provides information for teachers.

Kids Corner joins other educational resources on the site, including the Electric Universe, another site rich with activities for kids and resources for teachers. Also in that section of the company’s web site is information on the Wetlands of Winfield.

Appalachian Power has 1 million customers in Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee (as AEP Appalachian Power). It is a unit of American Electric Power, one of the largest electric utilities in the United States, which delivers electricity to more than 5 million customers in 11 states. AEP ranks among the nation’s largest generators of electricity, owning nearly 38,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the U.S. AEP also owns the nation’s largest electricity transmission system, a nearly 39,000-mile network that includes more 765 kilovolt extra-high voltage transmission lines than all other U.S. transmission systems combined.
