Severe Weather Update: April 2, 3:30 p.m.

April 2, 2023

Crews have restored electricity to almost 67,000 customers since damaging winds of more than 60 mph hit our service territory yesterday. At the height of the event, approximately 75,000 customers were without power. In the hardest hit areas — including northeast Ohio, Portsmouth and Upper Sandusky —  additional crews hit the ground this morning. Damage assessment teams have noted 765 spans of wire (33 line miles), 148 poles, 79 cross-arms, and 40 transformers in need of repair or replacement following damage caused by the storm.

We know how frustrating these back-to back storms have been this past week — be assured our crews are committed to getting your electricity on as quickly as they safely can. We won’t stop until all customers have their power restored.

FAQS

If I see crews out working, can they update me on when my power will be restored?

While we understand customers without power want the latest on restoration efforts, work zones can have many hazardous conditions so keeping your distance from crews while they are working is very important. This also allows them to stay focused on the job at hand and ensures everyone's safety. To get up-to-date information on your outage as it’s entered into the system, download the AEP Ohio app, sign up for alerts at AEPOhio.com/Alerts, or go to AEPOhio.com/OutageMap.

Will AEP Ohio reimburse me for groceries lost due to an outage?

You may be compensated for your losses through your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance. We recommend checking with your insurance agent. In general, we are not responsible for damages caused by natural occurrences.

CONTINUED SAFETY REMINDERS

  • Stay away from any downed wires. Call 911 and report any hazards through the AEP Ohio mobile app or by calling AEP Ohio at (800) 672-2231.
  • Check on family, friends and neighbors who are elderly, have small children or have a medical condition.
  • Investigate your surroundings before trying to clean up any debris. Tree limbs, leaves and other objects moved by the wind could hide downed wires. Do not attempt to remove tree limbs or debris within 10 feet of a power line.
  • Notify AEP Ohio if you’re using a generator. This protects you and our lineworkers as they work to restore power.
  • Never operate lanterns, heaters or fuel-fired stoves without proper ventilation.
  • Unplug major appliances to protect them when power is restored.
  • Refuel heaters, lamps and generators outside and away from any flames or sparks. Wipe up spilled fuel immediately.
  • Never burn charcoal indoors — it releases poisonous carbon monoxide.
