Average Monthly Payments

Hot summers and cold winters can make budgeting your energy bills harder. Our Average Monthly Payment (AMP) plan spreads the costs over the entire year, so you pay about the same amount each month.

How it works

We average your last 12 months of bills to create the average monthly payment. This amount changes slightly each month, based on your usage. The difference between the amount you pay and your actual bill is added or subtracted from a deferred balance throughout the year.

*AMP is only applicable to AEP Ohio charges. If you participate in Ohio Choice and want to enroll in a budget plan for generation charges, please contact your generation provider.

Frequently asked questions

  1. We add together usage charges for your last 12 months (or the number of months available)
  2. The total is divided by 12 (or the number of months available) to get your average use per month
  3. On your anniversary month, we look at the difference of what you paid and what you used, and add 1/12 of your deferred balance (or subtract if it's a credit) to the average payment amount for the next 12 months
  4. Your monthly amount is then recalculated each month based on your usage for the last 12 months

Your deferred balance is the difference between your Average Monthly Payment (the amount you pay) and the actual amount of electricity you use.

This balance allows your payment to remain in-between your highest and lowest usage months. If you use more electricity one month, the extra cost is added to the deferred balance. If you use less, the deferred balance is credited for the difference. The monthly billing amount changes are normal and help keep the fluctuation smaller than if you were not on the program.

Note: This balance will be due on your final bill if you move out of our service territory or on your next bill if you unenroll or miss two consecutive bill due dates. If you move to an address inside our service territory, the program and the balance travel with you.

Your AMP plan will renew each year on the anniversary date of when you enrolled as long as your account remains active and the account balance is current.

If you're on the Budget Plan, you pay a fixed monthly amount most of the year but have a yearly "settle‑up" that can result in a larger charge or credit. AMP smooths your bills using a rolling average so charges are more consistent, and you only settle up if you cancel the plan—you can cancel anytime. To switch to AMP, call us at 800-572-1113 or send us a message on Facebook.

Here is a side-by-side comparison of AMP vs. Budget.

AMP Budget
  • Amount varies based on rolling average.
  • No settlement occurs (unless participation is terminated)
  • Next AMP plan year amount determined by rolling average plus additional payment amount resulting from anniversary processing.
  • Deferred balance is rolled into the AMP additional amount on the anniversary month
  • Fixed amount for 11 months.
  • Reviewed and adjusted (if needed) in 6 months
  • Settlement on 12th month.
  • Next budget plan year amount determined by current budget estimate
  • Deferred balance is due on the anniversary/settle up month
