AEP OHIO AWARDS WODA COOPER COMPANIES MORE THAN $22,000 FOR COMMITMENT TO ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING

October 11, 2019

GAHANNA, Ohio, October 11, 2019 – AEP Ohio, an American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP) company, presented affordable housing developer Woda Cooper Companies with an incentive check for more than $22,000 through its EfficiencyCrafted Homes program.

The incentive recognizes Woda Cooper Companies’ commitment to providing affordable utility solutions for low-income seniors through high-energy efficiency standards. Open since late 2018, Fairwood Commons, a $12.2 million investment in Columbus’ Franklin Park neighborhood, is Ohio’s first multifamily property built to Passive House (PHIUS) certification standards and has achieved LEED Platinum certification, in addition to being ENERGY STAR-certified. It has also earned certifications for the Department of Energy’s Zero Energy Ready Homes and EPA’s Indoor airPLUS programs. Energy efficiency measures at the property are expected to minimize long-term maintenance costs and utility bills for residents.

“The incentive from AEP Ohio will contribute to our ongoing mission to provide high-quality affordable housing, peace-of-mind, and long term savings to senior residents at Fairwood Commons and other properties,” said Joe DiCesare, who is Project Executive-Construction with Woda Cooper Companies and managed construction for Fairwood Commons.

With an average HERS® index score of 38, Woda Cooper Companies has positioned Fairwood Commons as a leader in energy efficient affordable living. HERS® (Home Energy Rating System®) is a measure of energy efficiency between 150 and 0. Existing homes typically score over 100, while new homes have scores that range from 85 to 100. Homes built with EfficiencyCrafted standards typically score below 70. A score of 38 indicates that Fairwood Commons uses approximately 53 percent less energy than if built in compliance with the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code (the applicable code in Ohio at the time of construction).

“AEP Ohio is committed to providing a variety of programs that help customers save money and live comfortably at home,” said Raja Sundararajan, president and chief operating officer of AEP Ohio. “We’re proud to partner with developers like Woda Cooper who are building homes that will have a positive and lasting impact on the community.”

Since 2008, AEP Ohio’s Energy Efficiency programs have saved customers 4,835 total GWhs and more than $2 billion in energy costs, creating green jobs, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 3.8 million tons and sulfur dioxide emissions by 16,800 tons.

AEP Ohio offers a variety of additional Energy Efficiency programs to help residential and business customers save energy and money. For more information, visit AEPOhio.com/Save (residential) or AEPOhio.com/Solutions (business).
