APPALACHIAN ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR $4.5 MILLION ELECTRIC RELIABILITY UPGRADE IN CAMPBELL COUNTY

February 22, 2008

ROANOKE, Va., February 22, 2008 – Appalachian Power is proposing construction of a new $4.5 million 69 kilovolt (kV) electric substation to meet growing demands for electricity in northwestern Campbell County and southern Lynchburg.  The project entails constructing the substation on a site largely screened from view and integrating it into the electric transmission system. The company will hold a public workshop on the project 5-7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at the Flat Creek Baptist Church, 14368 Wards Road, Lynchburg, Va.

“This project is important to address growing electrical demands in the Wards Road corridor,” said Project Manager David Wright. “Local demand for electricity in this area is expected to reach and exceed the capacity of existing electrical facilities by 2009. The new substation reinforces the existing supply, provides capacity for future growth, and provides the company with alternate feed options that help shorten the duration of power outages when they occur.”

The company will seek approval from the Campbell County Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors to construct the new facilities. The project is planned to be in service by June 2009.
