ATHENS COUNTY EXCEEDS GOAL IN COMMUNITY ENERGY SAVERS PROGRAM; RECEIVES $85,602 FOR LIBRARIES' ENERGY EFFICIENCY UPGRADES

GAHANNA, Ohio, March 9, 2016  – Athens County’s libraries are about to become more energy efficient, thanks to a countywide effort to participate in energy efficiency programs offered through AEP Ohio, a unit of American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP) and Columbia Gas of Ohio!  The county libraries are receiving $85,602 to be used towards energy efficiency upgrades, after exceeding the goal of the four-month pilot program, Community Energy Savers (CES).  CES is meant to help residents and businesses reduce energy use and costs by increasing awareness of energy conservation and encouraging participation in the utilities’ energy efficiency programs.

Athens County participated in the CES program from October 2015 through January 2016. Residents and businesses throughout the county helped accumulate points by participating in one or more of the eligible energy efficiency programs offered by the two utilities.  In addition, AEP Ohio is providing Athens County with assistance in developing a Sustainability Roadmap that will help advance additional sustainability initiatives in the community.

From the start, Athens County community members and leaders decided the financial reward should go towards efficiency upgrades at five county libraries.  Local county representatives and community organizations made an extraordinary effort to educate residents and businesses on the benefits of participating in the CES program, which includes AEP Ohio and Columbia Gas of Ohio’s energy efficiency programs.

“I would like to thank the people of Athens County for supporting this initiative through their participation in the Community Energy Savers program. As we launched this pilot program in our community, we knew it was going to be a win-win situation and we are confident that this is just the beginning of a more sustainable Athens County,” said Athens County Commissioner Chris Chmiel.

“We applaud Athens County’s commitment to sustainable practices and its success,” said Jon Williams, manager of Energy Efficiency and Demand Response for AEP Ohio and Melissa Thompson, director of Regulatory Policy for Columbia Gas of Ohio. “By participating in Community Energy Savers, residents and businesses in Athens County were able to learn about and take advantage of energy efficiency programs and incentives available through our utilities.”

Throughout the year, Athens County customers of AEP Ohio and/or Columbia Gas of Ohio are encouraged to learn more about available energy efficiency programs at AEPOhio.com/ItsYourPower and ColumbiaGasOhio.com/Ways-to-Save.
