Leading the Way to a Smarter Grid

At AEP Ohio, we’re looking at new ways for our customers to better manage their energy use and save money on their electricity bills.

Every day, we turn the lights on in homes and businesses across the state, providing the best possible service to our customers. We know that innovation is the current that runs through our communities. That’s why AEP Ohio has applied the results of our successful gridSMART Demonstration Project to propose new technology throughout Ohio, harnessing tools that make our power grid more efficient.

Testing technologies: gridSMART Demo Project

In 2009, AEP Ohio customers in northeast central Ohio began a four-year partnership with us as we launched and tested new smart grid technologies and consumer programs. Completed in 2013, this project consisted of:

  • Smart Meters
  • Distribution Automation
  • Volt Var Optimization
  • Consumer Programs
  • Plug In Electric Vehicles
  • Smart Appliances

Results achieved through this project allowed customers to gain better control of energy use, save money and reduce consumption. And we were able to better evaluate how we do business. This is important because AEP Ohio is evolving from being an integrated utility to a “wires only” utility, focused on efficient and consistent delivery of electricity to customers’ homes.

Ultimately, what we learned over the course of the project has given us a better understanding of the technologies that are important to our customers and laid the foundation for the installation of future advanced technologies.

Next Steps: Continuing to Enhance the Way We Serve Customers

During the past four years, we tested a variety of technologies and the impact they have on the power grid. Three produced such promising results and benefits that we proposed a plan to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) to deploy them throughout areas in our service territory.

With these new technologies, we’re getting the lights back on faster with more accurate information as to where outages occur. We’re starting to see success in reducing the number of customers affected by power outages. And our substations are running more efficiently. The three proposed technologies are:

  • Smart Meters
  • Distribution Automation
  • Volt Var Optimization

When the plan is approved, these technologies will be deployed to help us better manage supply, reduce costs and minimize the number of customers affected by outages.
