The AEP Ohio gridSMART Demonstration Project, located in northeast central Ohio,
is about providing customers with information and new ways to better manage their
AEP Ohio replaced traditional electric meters with new, digital Smart Meters in
2010. This upgrade of about 110,000 traditional residential and business electric
meters in northeast central Ohio is the first step of the gridSMART project. We
will determine how the latest digital technology improves our ability to serve our
customers more efficiently, reliably and securely. AEP Ohio also is interested in
seeing how customers respond to special rate and program offerings that Smart Meter
technology makes possible.
Other technologies, such as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and “smart” appliances
will be tested to understand their impacts on the electric grid. These technologies
and others are designed to demonstrate the full benefits of installing a complete
smart grid for customers and AEP Ohio.
The gridSMART Project is designed to upgrade the electric grid in the northeast
central Ohio area by testing digital communications and automated functioning. AEP
Ohio will be able to show how smart grid technologies provide customers with greater
energy control, improve electricity delivery and cut energy consumption to delay
the need to build more power plants. Plus, our customers’ experience and feedback
will help us roll out programs and technologies successfully to other AEP Ohio customers.
