Marble Cliff Project

Thank you to those who joined us at the recent community meeting to discuss our upcoming project in the Village of Marble Cliff. This work will increase our capacity to serve the growing area and meet future energy demands.

We plan to continue to work with community leaders on a number of items we discussed, including aesthetics. We’re committed to keeping you informed and minimizing the impact to nearby homes, businesses and the environment throughout the duration of this project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Project

What type of work is being done?

We’ll be upgrading and expanding our Fifth Avenue substation in Marble Cliff. This also includes connecting our distribution and transmission lines to the new substation and removing the old substation.

This is a multi-phased project that will extend into 2022 and also includes moving Marble Cliff electric service to be powered by the new substation during a later phase. We’re committed to working with you as we move through each phase of this project and will share more information about what you can expect as plans are finalized.

Why are you doing this work?

Central Ohio continues to see tremendous growth and will only continue to develop. The new substation will help meet existing local electric needs and support future growth and economic development by providing greater energy capacity.

Location

Where will this work take place?

The project will take place in Marble Cliff near the intersection of Riverside Drive and Fifth Avenue in central Franklin County.

Why was this location selected?

With safety and cost in mind, the location’s proximity to the current station will mean minimal relocation of transmission and distribution facilities as well as minimize disruption to existing customer electric service.

What alternatives were considered?

Properties on the other side of Fifth Ave were considered, however, ultimately those were not for sale.

What areas does the substation service?

The new substation will ultimately serve areas including Grandview Heights, Upper Arlington, Marble Cliff and surrounding areas.

Community

What is being done to ensure the substation does not detract from the main entryway to the Village?

We strive to be a conscientious community member. We’re looking at adding vegetation and other visual blocks, like fencing. Landscaping will also be installed upon completion of the substation construction. We’ll share more information on what you can expect to see from the road as it becomes available.

Will this impact traffic in the area?

Temporary closures of Fifth Avenue may be required throughout the construction process. We’ll coordinate with local traffic control to minimize the impact, while working to ensure safety for the community and our crews.

Will there be power outages because of this work?

While we’ll work to avoid power outages in the near-term, it's possible that they'll be required later to ensure our crews can safely complete their work. However, if an outage is planned we’ll notify you in advance.

Project Schedule

Crews plan to start pre-construction activities in early summer 2020. We’ll have more specifics on timing soon and additional phases beyond what’s listed below. The project timeline is subject to change barring any bad weather or potential COVID-19 impacts.
